Nicholas Lucarelli has earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florida after successfully defending his dissertation, “Bridging Pathology and Spatial Omics: AI-Enabled Large-Scale Annotation and Application in Histopathology.”
Under the mentorship of Dr. Pinaki Sarder, Lucarelli’s research focused on advancing computational pathology through artificial intelligence and spatial omics technologies. His primary work developed an AI-driven tool to automate annotating 11 cell types from kidney pathology images. He also worked on multiple projects such as Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP), and Diabetic Nephropathy. Nick’s work has the potential to improve disease characterization, biomarker discovery, and precision medicine by helping researchers and clinicians better understand the complex spatial organization of cells within tissues.
